Julie Moore

Julie Moore

Dr. Julie Moore is the Executive Director of Secondary Education for Liberty Public Schools in Liberty, MO.  In that role, she works directly with building leaders on the implementation of district initiatives that impact student learning.  Right now, the district is focused on implementing PBL in the PK-12 setting to optimize learning for all students. In addition, her team has taken a deeper dive into John Hattie’s work with Visible Learning. Julie has spent 21 years serving in public education, 15 of those years for Liberty Public Schools.  She also spent six years in the classroom as an ELA teacher and working with at-risk students. Julie holds a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis and a Master’s in Learning and Instruction from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Erik Gundersen

Erik Gundersen is the superintendent of schools for the Pascack Valley Regional High School District, located in Bergen County, New Jersey. Erik earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics Education from the University of Delaware, a Masters degree in Educational Technology from New Jersey City University, and an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Seton Hall University. He has spent his entire 22-year career in the Pascack Valley Regional High School District serving as a physics teacher, supervisor of science and technology education, director of curriculum, and is now completing his sixth year as superintendent. Erik continues his work and passion for physics as an author of several physics textbooks, including “The Handy Physics Answer Book,” and “Applied Physics.”

Gene Freeman

Gene Freeman, Ed.D., is superintendent of the Fox Chapel Area School District in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Previously, Dr. Freeman was the superintendent of schools at Manheim Township School District in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for six years. His tenure at Manheim Township School District was marked with improved academic outcomes and moving a multimillion dollar deficit in 2009 to a multimillion dollar surplus in 2013. He has also served as the superintendent of Weatherly Area School District in Weatherly, Pennsylvania, and as a middle school teacher, coordinator of initially licensed teachers, and executive director of support services in North Carolina. Dr. Freeman earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, his teaching certification and a master’s in elementary education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, his Ed.S. at South Carolina State University, and his doctorate at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina.

Gretchen Brion-Meisels

Gretchen Brion-Meisels is a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and an expert in adolescent development. Her research explores how relationships between youth and adults can support a positive school climate. She also studies and teaches about partnering with youth in educational research, preventing bullying, and creating holistic student support systems. See full bio

Heather C. Hill

Heather C. Hill is the Jerome T. Murphy Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She focuses on teacher quality in mathematics, developing ways of measuring and improving teachers’ mathematical knowledge and the quality of mathematical instruction. Houman Harouni

Houman Harouni is a Lecturer on Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education. His work addresses the problem of purpose in education — particularly mathematics — through a multidisciplinary lens that includes history, philosophy, and psychology. In addition to his work at Harvard, Harouni is a Spencer Fellow at the National Academy of Education and was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is an advisor to the Ministry of Science and Technology in Ecuador, a consultant with the Ministry of Education in China, and a long-time organizer and contributor to the training of teachers working with refugee populations in the Middle East. James S. Kim

James S. Kim is an associate professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He studies the effectiveness of elementary school reading interventions and reforms, with a specialization in summer reading programs. Jon R. Star is a professor of education and educational psychologist at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He studies how children learn mathematics, the development of flexibility in problem solving, and the effectiveness of instructional and curricular interventions. Katherine K. Merseth

Katherine K. Merseth is Senior Lecturer on Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her work concentrates on charter schools, teacher education, mathematics education, and the case-method of instruction. In mathematics education, Professor Merseth was the principal investigator of the Mathematics Case Development Project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Massachusetts Math and Science Partnership working with middle school mathematics teachers using classroom based cases; she also served as co-principal investigator of the Teacher Education Addressing Mathematics and Science in Boston and Cambridge Project.
